We are building a world-class payments platform that moves billions of dollars, in 191 countries, with 75+ currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build and maintain our own in-house global payments platform because no solution exists with the global reach needed. Payments Processing within Payments, is the payment gateway and core platform of the Airbnb Payments ecosystem. We are the team that connects Airbnb to the outside world of payment processors for the execution of any payment anywhere reliably, accurately, conveniently, and cost-effectively.

The Difference You Will Make

Our platform integrates with 19 different Payments Service Providers and moves billions of dollars on an annual basis. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to build and lead the team that will be responsible for designing, architecting and maintaining Airbnb Payment Gateway systems. With our growing expansion of products we see Global and Local Payments methods playing a major role in conversion, approval rates and cost-effective drivers for Airbnb, and this role will help oversee expansion of this platform immediately and over the next several years

A Typical Day

This role requires heavy cross-collaboration with teams across other Platform organizations (Payments, Finance, Partnership) and functions (Product Management, Operations, SOX) to inform, validate, track and influence the implementation and maintenance of the payments platform. This team is currently growing, and the scope includes opportunities to build deeper infrastructural services to provide a platform with which we can easily fulfill business requirements, and offer payment services to people anywhere in the world in a compliant, reliable and cost-effective manner.



Core aspects of the role include:

• Setting and communicating strategy and direction of the team to evolve and maintain current payment systems.
• Refining team processes and work divisions to enable effective prioritization, planning, and communication of the team’s sprint commitments
• Building relationships and working rhythms across peers and stakeholders in both India and the US
• Collaborating with organization Staff and Sr. Staff engineers to assist team in aligning architecture trade-offs
• Coaching and mentoring the team with empathy to do their best work while growing in their roles & responsibilities
• Creating deliberate plans and opportunities for addressing technical debt & quality, facilitating learning, and encouraging cultural engagement
• Participating in India site level and global initiatives to create a strong Payments organization

Your Expertise

• 3-5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, with 9+ years of industry experience with a BS/Masters or 6+ years of industry experience with a PhD
• Strong coding abilities and experience with architectural patterns of large, high-scale applications.
• Experience architecting, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA).
• Familiarity with patterns, libraries and frameworks for building and testing services, and service-to-service communication.
• Expertise proactively managing and communicating dependencies across parallel tracks of work and cross-functional stakeholders
• Demonstrable experience creating expectations, coaching, and mentorship plans for ICs
• Comfortable independently establishing and validating priorities and direction in the absence of Product Management
• Track record of contributing to Technical Quality practices and roadmaps for the organization
• Experience managing distributed teams of varying experience levels
• Experience managing and interacting with geographically distributed teams and partners is a plus
• Previous experience building payment systems is a plus

And beyond. ⭐️ THE BUSINESS SEGMENT LEAD ROLE ⭐️ At Alan, we split the French market in several business segments, each of them corresponding to a category of clients (whether by size, or industry). The role of a Business Segment Lead is to reach market leadership in their given segment. To succeed, you will have to (1) articulate a vision for your segment, (2) define priorities and resources to deliver, and (3) make strategic decisions for your segment based on market insights. The Business Segment Lead role is made for transversal influence as we operate based on distributed ownership. You will work closely with all teams involved in the success of your segment (Product, Insurance, Sales, Marketing). You will also collaborate with other segment leaders to build-up knowledge, share best practices, and create alignment around a long-term value plan. MAIN MISSIONS INCLUDE: - Market intelligence: You’ll build expertise on our market and competitive landscape. You’ll work both on the quantitative side (sizing) and the qualitative side (customers’ pain points and needs). - Value proposition and pricing: Our goal is to differentiate our offer from the market. You’ll relentlessly ask yourself: what is the best product offering to become leader in this segment? - Go-to-Market strategy: You’ll work both on renewal (account management) and expansion strategy (business development). This will require you to adapt and innovate when it comes to distribution channels, sub-segments, and partners management. - P&L ownership & Resources allocation: You’ll own the return on investment of your segment and are in charge of building the case for internal resources allocation based on your P&L. - Product trade-off: You’ll work together with product teams in order for us to build the best product based on market insights. WE ARE CURRENTLY HIRING FOR EACH OF THE 3 FOLLOWING SEGMENTS: - Tech - It is Alan’s historical core market. - We reached significant market shares in the start-up & SaaS sub-segment. - We are building momentum in our consulting sub-segment. - Industry - It is one of Alan's most significant growth opportunities. - This segment encompasses various industries, including: Manufacturing, Wholesale, Textiles, as well as Luxury & Cosmetics. - New Segments - It gathers several, high potential sub-segments where everything is to be built. - We will focus heavily on those new opportunities in the coming years. ⭐️ IF YOU HAVE SOME OF THE FOLLOWING, YOU MAY BE A GREAT FIT ⭐️ - At least 8 years of prior experience leading a business (product category, business segment, etc.) - Full working proficiency in French - At least advanced level in English - An exceptional ability to establish transversal influence - Used to analyze and manipulate data to build a 360 degree view of your market - A strong business sense while being able to go deep into product considerations - Able to articulate clear strategies in spite of complexity/uncertainty - A prior experience working with senior leadership - You are a generalist self-starter (Vs a specialist of 1 single industry) able to adapt fast and not afraid to go on the field to support your team mates and learn from them - You are based in (or willing to relocate to) either Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Brussels, Madrid or Barcelona.
